To believe in God has a big upside and no downside since if you are wrong, and there is no God, you are simply dead. To disbelieve in God has a big downside and no upside since if you are wrong, and God does exist, you are dead when you could have lived.

The wager is dangerous to one’s personal integrity of course, but if it’s also fallacy it might be deadly dangerous.

Blaise was a smart guy but I think he has made a miscalculation here. The wager becomes problematic if his assumption is invalid. Suppose that believing by faith something that is not true actually DOES have consequences after death. Suppose that believing in God when He doesn’t exist means you die when you could have lived.
